About me

Louis Greenberg photoI am an author, editor and tutor born in Johannesburg, South Africa. I studied English and History and qualified with a Master’s degree on sex and family in modern American vampire fiction. Later I returned to university for a doctorate on the post-religious apocalyptic fiction of Douglas Coupland.

An Advanced Professional member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading, I have edited and proofread scores of books, mostly of fiction, for publishers including Random House Struik, Penguin, Head of Zeus, Titan Books and NB Publishers, along with corporate and academic work for journals and institutions. I am a creative writing tutor at Oxford University's Department for Continuing Education and have also tutored writing and editing for the Writers’ College. Previous jobs have included reshelving books at a public library, cashiering at a restaurant and at a supermarket, student writing consultancy, lecturing, thirteen years’ bookselling and marketing at a bookshop chain, and as commissioning editor of eKhaya, Random House Struik’s digital imprint.

Under the name S.L. Grey, Sarah Lotz and I co-write horror-thrillers published in over fifteen languages. Our first novel, The Mall, was published by Corvus in 2011. The Ward was released in 2012, and The New Girl in October 2013. Under Ground was published by Pan Macmillan in 2015, and The Apartment in 2016; both of these have been optioned for film.

My first novel, The Beggars’ Signwriters (Umuzi, 2006), was shortlisted for the 2007 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize and the 2007 University of Johannesburg Prize. I compiled and edited Home Away (Zebra Press, 2010), a collaboration by 24 writers set in a single, global day. My second novel, Dark Windows, was published by Umuzi in 2014, while my latest novel, Green Valley, appeared in German in 2018 and English in 2019. My published work also includes photos, poems, academic articles and short stories.

Apart from being one of only two people in the world to have worked out who killed Laura K, I have a keen but purely amateur interest in art, food, puzzles, music, photography and travel. I'm based in the middle of England.
